About this site

This site is the result of a group of people who met in January 2009 to figure out how to help ourselves through tough economic times, largely by becoming somewhat more self-reliant in terms of energy, food and transportation. In the process, we hope to build a stronger, healthier and closer community... more.

Food Sustainability

Learn some of the economics of food and why locally grown food is important.

Food

  • Currently dependent on fossil fuels for growth, harvest, transport and preservation
  • Average of 10 units of fossil fuel energy to produce 1 unit of food energy
  • Current population unsustainable given fossil fuel depletion

The most important source of energy is food. Without food the 20,000 men, women and children in Oxford Hills will not survive. We have only a three day's local supply of food available at any one time.

Our food system at present relies on fossil fuels:

  • in the form of fertilizers and pesticides to grow
  • in the manufacturing and packaging
  • in the gasoline needed to transport it the average of 1500 miles to our town
  • to power the store's electricity (mostly coal) used to refrigerate our food
  • to power the supermarkets from which we buy our food (mostly coal)
  • to transport it to our home
  • to refrigerate it once it is home
  • to power the appliances used to prepare and cook our food
  • we then rely on fossil fuels to pump and heat the water to wash the dishes and clean up after the meal

What will happen to our food supplies when the fossil fuels are no longer affordable or available?

What are you willing to do to ensure you and your family will eat?
